Buck's introduction gives general information on orthography and lists key similarities and differences between these two languages, with comparisons with Latin. The grammar features an extensive 80-page section on phonology, followed by an equally detailed 100 pages on grammatical inflection and syntax. A collection of the most important inscriptions in Oscan and Umbrian follows, with a separate glossary for each language. Buck's work also features photographs and illutrations of important inscriptions, as well as a map. It is an indispensable resource for the study of the Italic dialects of pre-Roman Italy. | | | Product Details: | | | Author:

An Important Work - Now Available for Little MoneyJul 01, 2006 Yes, it's very old, but you still have to own this, if you are going to do anything with Umbrian. Anyone enthused about Sabellic languages should burn incense to the publishings gods in thanks for this affordable reprint. Compared to the $150+ Olms reprint, this edition is dirt cheap.

Buy it while it still exists...Mar 19, 2003 ...for apparently it won't be reprinted and it is the only Oscan and Umbrian grammar ever made and available on the market. I give it 3 stars because it is quite old (1930s for the second edition) and then it lacks some accuracy in the most technical aspects of its linguistic analysis. But some may give it 5 stars because of its priceless and unique linguistic value, and witness. And look at the price: it is more than affordable. Concerning the content, this grammar constantly refers to Latin in a comparative and typological perspective, and analyses Oscan and Umbrian morphology, syntax, phonetics, providing precious information about the available texts and being thorough even in the analysis of Oscan and Umbrian prepositions, conjunctions, for example, which are generally eluded or little studied in many grammars written during this period.
